What's the difference between dolomite and calcite, how are they related?

Dolomite and calcite are both carbonate minerals that are closely related but have some key differences:

Similarities:

  1. Both are calcium carbonate minerals
  2. Both have a similar crystal structure (rhombohedral)
  3. Both are common in sedimentary rocks, especially limestone

Key differences:

  1. Chemical composition:
  • Calcite: CaCO3 (calcium carbonate)
  • Dolomite: CaMg(CO3)2 (calcium magnesium carbonate)
  1. Hardness:
  • Calcite: 3 on the Mohs scale
  • Dolomite: 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale
  1. Reaction with acid:
  • Calcite: Reacts vigorously with dilute hydrochloric acid
  • Dolomite: Reacts weakly with cold dilute hydrochloric acid, but more vigorously when powdered or with warm acid
  1. Crystal structure:
  • While both have a rhombohedral structure, dolomite has alternating layers of calcium and magnesium
  1. Formation:
  • Calcite often forms directly from calcium-rich solutions
  • Dolomite typically forms through a process called dolomitization, where magnesium replaces some calcium in existing limestone
  1. Occurrence:
  • Calcite is more common and widespread
  • Dolomite is less common but still abundant in certain geological settings
  1. Cleavage:
  • Both have perfect rhombohedral cleavage, but dolomite's cleavage faces are often slightly curved

Relationship:
Dolomite is often formed from calcite through a process called dolomitization. This occurs when magnesium-rich fluids percolate through limestone (composed mainly of calcite), replacing some of the calcium ions with magnesium. This process can happen soon after limestone deposition or much later.

In some geological environments, calcite and dolomite can be found together, forming a spectrum of compositions between pure calcite and pure dolomite. This intermediate mineral is sometimes called "dolomitic limestone" or "calcitic dolomite," depending on the proportions of calcium and magnesium.

Understanding the relationship and differences between calcite and dolomite is important in fields such as geology, mineralogy, and petroleum geology, as their presence can indicate specific environmental conditions during rock formation and affect the properties of the rock.
